Methodology

Watch Score

The Watch Score says how worth watching an upcoming college game looks, from 0 to 100. A game scores high when both teams are good and neither is a big favorite. Every morning the three best-scoring games of the day (45 or higher) become the home page's Games to watch. Only games in the next 7 days count. If today has none worth picking, the picks come from the next day that does.

It is not a prediction. It doesn't say who will win, and it isn't betting advice.

Formula

Watch Score = 100 × (
    0.45 × weaker team's strength
  + 0.25 × average strength
  + 0.30 × closeness )

Worked example

Team A's rating is better than 90% of teams (strength 0.90), Team B's better than 80% (0.80), and their ratings are 3 points apart (closeness 1 − 3 ÷ 15 = 0.80). Watch Score = 100 × (0.45 × 0.80 + 0.25 × 0.85 + 0.30 × 0.80) = 81.

The reasons under each pick

Each pick shows the facts behind it, straight from the data: two AP Top 25 teams ("Top-10 matchup" when both are in the top 10), a ranked team playing away against a team rated within 5 points ("No. 3 on the road"), ratings within 3 points of each other, a conference game, or two teams that are both unbeaten with at least 3 wins.
